John Gilbert of Cookstown passed away peacefully in his 85th year at Barrie Manor on Friday, March 31st, 2023. Beloved husband of Helen Gilbert, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this July. Dear father of Laura (Charlie), Caroline (Andrew) and Matthew. Grandfather to Briar and Cullen. He is predeceased by his sister Patricia (Andrew) of Bury St. Edmunds, England.
Dr. Gilbert was an educator who immigrated from England to start his career. He met his wife, Helen, while they were both teaching at Iron Bridge in northern Ontario. His teaching and pursuit of higher education took them to Sault St. Marie, Waterloo (where he completed his Masters) and back to Bristol, England to complete his Doctorate in East African History. He and his growing family returned to Canada where they settled in Cookstown in 1975. He was an elementary teacher and vice-principal at Tottenham Public, Tecumseth South, Alliston Union and Baxter Central. He was an active member of the teacher’s union, notably as a member of the provincial negotiation team.
In his retirement, he continued to enjoy his hobbies and interests which included politics, travel, theatre, and art. Many neighbours, friends and family have one of John’s oil paintings in their homes.
The family wishes to thank Dr. McTurk, Dr. Jansen and the many PSWs who have helped him over the past few years. Respecting John’s wishes there will be no service at this time. A cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations to one of the following charities is suggested: Heart & Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, Parkinson Canada, Stevenson Memorial Hospital or Matthew’s House.
