Charles Young Obituary

Charles Paul Young in his 89th year, late of Barrie, Callander and Washago, Ontario - passed away peacefully on February 23, 2024, surrounded by family at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital in Orillia.

From Ireland to Ontario, a life well-lived.

Predeceased by wife Joan ( nee Archer, 2017) after 58 years of marriage.

Father of Lorraine (Todd Sholtz) and Paul (Caroline Arseneau) and proud Poppa of Hannah, Mila and Cormac. (…had also taken a liking to family newcomer Yannick)

Born July 17, 1935 in Narraghmore, County Kildare, Ireland. Younger brother to Beatrice (deceased 2012/ Bertie Graham deceased 1974) and older brother to John (deceased 2023). Survived by sister-in-law Sheila, and sisters Patsy(Neville Gyves), Alice (Andy Corrigan) and Frances (Willy Austin). He will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews in Canada, Ireland, England and Denmark.

Charlie emigrated to Canada in 1957, on the Cunard Line “Carintha” with three other young lrishmen. He ultimately landed in Barrie where one had a relative that would ease their transition.

Charlie quickly found carpentry work and soon signed on with Allandale Lumber where he was assigned to work on a renovation project at Archer’s Nursing Home on Bayfield Street. There, he met young Joan May Archer, making her his wife in November1959.

Joan and Charlie built their first home on Peel Street, but by 1967 had moved to William Street in Allandale. Soon, Charlie was able to purchase 200 acres of forest and rock in Calendar, Ontario a favourite hunt camp, farm and snowmobile spot where he later built his unique hand hewn retirement home.

By 1971 he owned Allandale Construction and built many commercial, industrial and institutional facilities around Barrie before retiring in 1987 to recover from an unusual blood disease that had gone undetected for some time.

And what a recovery and retirement! Tractors and steam engines, woodworking, travel and gardening, friends and family, he enjoyed 30 years of leisure and fun with Joan by his side, their kids well advised about how to build and maintain their homes, and the grandkids indulged and encouraged in every way possible.

When Joan died suddenly in 2017 Charlie took on a new adventure, finding good placements for his treasury of antique farm equipment and moving to Washago where he has enjoyed his new community, winning at euchre and making new friends on the river.

Friends and family have always been central to Charlie’s happiness. We hope that many will join together to celebrate his life on Sunday March 17, 2024 from Noon to 3:00 p.m. at Ferndale Banquet Hall, 24 Ferndale Industrial Drive, Barrie.
