Margaret Elizabeth Lawrence

Our beloved and treasured mother Margaret, passed away peacefully on December 16th, on Derek’s birthday at Sunrise Retirement of Aurora. Beloved wife of Derek Lawrence for 66 years. Dear mother of son Chris Lawrence and Daughter Nicola James (Andrew). Grandmother of Kiana and Rebecca Lawrence, Step Grandmother of Shuwen James, Shuwei James, Hana McConville. Step Great Grandmother of Bodhi, Grey, Indie, Emmy, Noli and Riley. Aunt to Mark August, Sue August, Nigel August, Sonia Downer (Harvey).

 Mom was born in Bromley Kent, England. She travelled through Europe when she was a teen and then worked as a travel agent in London. She met dad and married in 1958. On their first date he told her he wanted to move to Canada which they did in 1966, living first in Toronto and then buying a house in the countryside at the time- Holland Landing. Mom enjoyed her job as administrative assistant at Nor Baker Industries in Newmarket for over 25 years. Like her mother before her, she was an avid gardener, baker, cook, and best friend to many.

Mom and Dad were active in the community, first with the Progress Club and later with Prostate Cancer Canada where mom supported Dad at the many charity functions. They travelled extensively in their later years including Southeast Asia, South Africa and Australia. They loved coming to Harmony Dawn, Nicola and Andys’ retreat centre, to help out in the kitchen. They loved mingling with guests, several of whom became their friends. Her laugh was infectious and her kindness legendary.   

She was a beacon of light to all those who came in contact with her. A cherished wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She never had a harsh word to say about anyone. Always dignified, graceful and kind, caring deeply for her family and friends.

A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Paul F. Kent Funeral Home, (16 King Street, N. Cookstown) on Sunday December 22nd, 2024, from 11:00 am - 1:30 pm.
